Support of overtsea applicants for application to the Royal Society Newton International Fellowships and the British Academy International Fellowships with a mid-March 2026 deadline. Due to University of Birmnigham internal deadlines, potential applicant need to take earlier than 15th January.
PhD studentships
The University of Birmingham can support home and international PhD students with competitive PhD programs. Each year in our lab it will be possible to apply for projects in one of the following programs (with deadline for application in December/January for entry in September of the next year). Please check eligibility before applying and navigate at the link provided below (you can search the project associated to my lab in each programme website):
Fully sponsored PhD project “Deciphering the (epi)genetic determinants of sex in monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria Araucana)” is currently available for Home Student applicants. The deadline for application is the 30/01/2026. If interested, please apply to the Birmingham PhD programme to this project (search Catoni as supervisor) with your CV and clearly indicate the project title and the supervisor (Dr Marco Catoni) in your application. BBSRC-funded Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP): One project in the field of plant epigenetic and genome plasticity for the study of crop biology and food security. Projects’ descriptions (search my project under “Sustainable Agriculture and Food” and “Crop science”) and full istructions for the application are published on the MIBTP website.
NERC-funded CENTA studentship: One interdisciplinary project in the field of genome plasticity in ecological and plant evolution contexts. Projects’ descriptions and istruction for the application are published on the CENTA website. Search our projects in the list by looking for “Catoni” as supervisor. Application will be necessary also as Birmingham PhD programme. Deadline for application is set at the end of the year.
Darwin studentship: One project in the field of microbiology (Project Description). Interested students must apply to the Birmingham PhD programme and clearly indicate the source of funds as the Darwin Trust. In your application please include the Darwin Application Form. Deadline for application is set at the end of the year. Please check the selection criteria before applying. Contact m.catoni@bham.ac.uk if you have question related to this programme.
Chinese Government Scholarships (CSC): We can host students from China under the CSC sponsorship for PhD projects. Eligible Chinese PhD candidates are requested to apply for their Birmingham PhD programme by January, specifying that they intend to apply for CSC in their application, to obtain a conditional offer. At he same time, the PhD candidates need to apply to contact the lab (m.catoni@bham.ac.uk) by the end of January, sending their CV and motivation, and the UoB application number, for internal selection in Birmingham. Selected candidates will receive the UoB Nomination Letter necessary for their application to CSC by March. CSC has final decision about the students to be supported (https://www.csc.edu.cn/). English Language test is necessary. A proposed project is available.

Master and undergraduate projects
If you are studing at the University of Birmingham, we offer project to MRes, Msc, MSci and BSc students. Please get in touch (m.catoni@bham.ac.uk) if you are interested in carrying out your research project in the lab.
Visiting studentships
We have availability for student interships in our lab for 3 to 12 months to fulfil the requirement of a degree programme (e.g. master’s thesis, experience abroad for international PhD students) or part of exchange programmes (e.g. Erasmus+).
